Early Detection Memory Screening Project

The Brain Health Armenia Project, a pioneering early detection memory screening and Alzheimer’s disease training program in Armenia launched in 2022. This multi-disciplinary, country-wide mobile program is funded by Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative (DAC) through June 2023. The project is a collaboration with the Armenian EyeCare Project to provide early detection memory screening throughout the country and has been endorsed by the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Health. The Brain Health Armenia Project is dedicated to improving the quality of care for individuals with dementia in Armenia. Our team, consisting of primary care physicians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers, provides didactic and hands-on training to healthcare professionals and family caregivers. The project has already conducted screenings of over 4500 people and has revealed a high incidence of cognitive impairment in elders in Armenia. This groundbreaking project is a significant step forward in early detection of memory problems and Alzheimer’s disease. Under the leadership of Dr. Jane Mahakian, the initiative aims to incorporate cognitive screenings as a standard of medical care throughout Armenia.

Building on the success of the Brain Health Project, Phase 2 expansion began in October 2023. This project is funded by the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation. The Brain Health Project expansion includes a country-wide mobile in-home cognitive and palliative care program for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The project is a collaborative effort between Alzheimer’s Care Armenia and healthcare professionals in Armenia, and is expected to have a lasting impact on the country’s healthcare system. With a focus on sustainable solutions, the project aims to create a lasting legacy of improved dementia care in Armenia.
